In online safety, parents must be No. 1 defense

Looking at the mugshots of the arrested men that ran on the front page of our newspaper Tuesday, you generally see rather nondescript faces of people who if you are honest could look like your neighbor. They, in fact, seemingly led normal lives. There was a retired police officer, a store clerk, a security guard, a postal carrier and a software programmer among those arrested.

It must be said that these men are only suspects. They have not been convicted of any crime. Nonetheless, it is disturbing to review the transcripts of the Internet conversations between the suspects and the decoys.

One of the transcripts shows a suspect asking "when do you turn 15" and adding, "I'm 47, would that be too old to get together." The suspect then discusses taking a shower with the decoy and reassuring him that he is HIV-negative.

It's playoff time in the TM Major League

The Bandits will face the JL Wegenaar Cubs, who posted a surprising 20-3 rout of MugShots. Pitcher Mike Ryan has been outstanding all season for manager Willie Couchon's Cubs, but it was the offense that turned heads last Sunday.

In the other semi, Fillmore Real Estate meets Matthew Fiuneral Home. With John Hynes (Fillmore) and Nick Grieco (Matthew) pitching, it should be a low-scoring affair.

US kidnapper Garrido told mum victim was his daughter

"Police mugshots of Phillip and Nancy Garrido who were arrested in the case of Jaycee Lee Dugard, now 29, who was kidnapped 18 years ago when she was just 11. The elderly mother of Garrido, who is accused of abducting Dugard in 1991 said Sunday she was told the girl was her granddaughter." .

Shopwatch scheme launched in Armley

Shops will also be provided with a sheet of 'mugshots' of known shoplifters who offend within the area so they can be on the lookout for them and alert other shops should they show up. Inspector Mark Bownass from North West Inner Neighbourhood Policing Team told Armley Today: "The scheme enables the various shopkeepers and businesses to work together, as well as with the Police and partner agencies to combat the problem of shop theft in the area. "Although the box is not a substitute for 999, if there is a crime in progress or the owners are in fear, it allows members of the shop keeping community to support each other, and provide peace of mind as well as working with us." Nigel Conder, town centre manager, added: "The Alertbox has only been in a short while in Armley, but retailers are already saying it is making a difference and making them feel safer.

Lucozade bombers: Kevin the Teenager returns

When you look at their sad, very ordinary police mugshots on TV or in today's newspapers, what do you think about? I think of Kevin the Teenager.

This is clearly not how the "Lucozade bombers" – as today's Guardian calls them – think of themselves with their martyrdom videos about wave upon wave of attacks against the infidel west.

I spy with my (digital) eye…

I lined up for mug shots and finger printing with Natasha, who had been soliciting, and some defiant urchins being indexed for minor infractions.

Digital parameters

Posing for official photos has stimulated the output of printed matter telling you, often over four or five pages and giving detailed illustrations and rules, about how to pose for the required snap and, in fine print, that your fee will be forfeited if your image exceeds computer generated digital parameters. Remember those cute, smelly cubicles you used to go into and giggle into the camera and your photos slotted out 10 minutes later still wet around the edges? Out of date thanks to digitalization. Polaroid instant print film? Forget it; they were a short-lived, gooey photo op, out-teched by pocket-sized cameras, mega pixels and print your own photos.

Spinning the first week of Michael Bryant's new life: It helps to

They argue it's not so unusual for the accused in such a case to avoid a bail hearing and put off fingerprinting and mug shots to a later date. It must precede his Oct. 19 court appearance at Old City Hall.

And yet, nothing – and everything – is different.

“We knew from the outset because of who the accused was that this case would be under extreme scrutiny," says police traffic services Sgt. Tim Burrows. “Everybody, from the first person on the scene to the last investigator who has touched this, has known this has got to be the case where – because there is going to be so much public opinion and so much scrutiny – we do everything right and above board ... Nobody would jeopardize the investigation by making a false accusation or statement that wasn't there."

It must be pointed out, says Patrick Monahan, former dean of Osgoode Hall Law School and Bryant friend (“I would do anything for Michael Bryant"), such scrutiny can cut both ways.

Drunk drivers named and shamed in new campaign

Sadly, the message appears to be by-passing some locals as mug shots of the first quintet to be named and shamed were carried in the paper this week (above, and below right).

The campaign was relaunched with a front-page editorial warning that anyone caught drink-driving before 31 August will be named and shamed both on the front page of the Telegraph, and in the paper's 'hall of shame' on thisisgrimsby.co.uk.

"In the two months that the drink-drive campaign ran last year, 36 drivers made the dangerous decision to get behind the wheel after too much to drink," it said.

A POLICE team working in inner city Birmingham has been nominated

The youngsters took fingerprints and "mug shots" of each other, visited the police control room and also met officers from the force's Firearms Unit.

They have now been nominated in the fourth annual national Tackling Drugs Changing Lives Awards. Insp Danielle Corfield, for Lozells, Birchfield and East Handsworth said: "I'm very proud of the team who have a real energy and commitment to serving the local community.

"We're involved in many different initiatives including supporting local youth and sports groups."

I'm sure the reaction would've been the same if the mug shots were of white thugs. And I would hope that MDN, at least, knows that Pittsburgh, being home to Carnegie Mellon, isn't a hillbilly town. (They might even know that Pgh. is nationally known as a bio-tech center, and that employment in higher education is greater than in basic industry.)

Cold War fallout for Brookhaven National Lab

Their photographs taken at the time, with their numbers held in front of them, look like police mug shots. Some children whose growth was stunted by radiation were photographed naked and compared with others. "The doctors dehumanized the people to the point that they were mere identification numbers or body parts," Rongelap later said in its tribunal claim.

The two distant cousins are members of the extended Anjain family, tied by blood and marriage to just about everyone else from Rongelap. As a young girl, Eknilang grew up on the Ailinginae Atoll, a sliver of islands about 20 miles from Rongelap that from the air look like butterfly wings.

"It was a beautiful life before," she recalled.

The day of the Bravo blast was her eighth birthday. She awoke to a trembling noise.

Every shift brings plenty of stress for dispatchers

At his fingertips, the 27-year-old city dispatcher has all of the background information he needs: the man's mug shots, distinguishing characteristics and last known address. He's also trying to calm down the caller while asking her what happened and where the man is as a fellow dispatcher dials the police. Smith is just 20 minutes into his night shift. The call sets the tone for Smith's job as a dispatcher, where the outcome of any given emergency hinges on the quickness and quality of communication between a caller and Smith. It's not an easy job, he said. Callers are rarely calm or rational in the face of injury or threat. Just ask Smith or fellow dispatcher Jennifer Stone, 24. Both have been dispatching since 2007, and in that time routinely deal with what most people only read about in a newspaper.

The Fifth Column: Tough Time in the Old Brick House

What you see in most mug shots, in those blank eyes and tight lips, is a person who has very likely had a very bad time and has just come to the realization that they are in for a much worse time.

There was a holding cell in the old jail that was like something out of the dark corners of Edgar Allen Poe’s mind. It was clean enough, I suppose, and it had some light, of course. But it wasn’t much bigger than a closet and, if you had been dragged in at 3 a.m. after getting in some drunken scrap with your next-door neighbor, I can’t think of a worse place to spend an hour.

I went through the front door of the jail once to interview a prisoner who had been a bit of a name in Loudoun County political circles before being convicted of some quite disturbing acts.

Hundreds of People Locked Up for Good Cause

The jail birds had their mug shots taken, then spent an hour calling people requesting bail money. Fox 7's News Director Bob Walters and his side kick, Assistant News Director Warren Korff were both arrested Wednesday afternoon. Each jail bird who participated tried to raise $1,200 for MDA. "Last night when I went on my site I was really excited because there was money for my bail. But then, I realized my wife sent out a plea. So, everyone was responding to her. I think most people would like to see me locked up for a while," said Bob Walters. Nearly $61,000 were raised. That money will help Evansville families pay for medical equipment and send kids to summer camp. .

Police look out for rivalry vandalism

Their mug shots were run publicly in the Aiken Standard and their names released as well. Following the incidents, police stepped up patrols. "We would like to keep this rivalry on the field as a sporting event," Hall said. In subsequent years there have been some lesser crimes committed, but police said they will make charges even for lesser offenses. In addition to criminal charges, students also face potential expulsion from school. Contact Karen Daily at kdaily@aikenstandard.com. Blackhawks foursome seeks Team Canada roles, but jobs are scarce

The damn fools just don't know how to put on a show with mug shots to ramp up the excitement. No one has been charged with assaulting a cab driver yet and so no press conferences have been called for the Saddledome in which Seabrook, Keith, Sharp or Toews will be asked to look contrite the same way Patrick Kane did last week at Woodridge. No, this time the focus strictly will be on class acts. While Team Canada executive director Steve Yzerman, a class act himself, won't announce his team until just before Christmas for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, the Blackhawks should be able to measure their advance in the hockey world by how many of their high-class four players are selected. .

Lubbockites react to controversial courthouse postings

One of signs posted had several mug shots of people wearing Obama t-shirts stating there must be a message here, insinuating that Obama supporters could be criminals. Friday, some Lubbock residents said they thought head should resign, "I believe, just because he made that statement, that he should resign. Because the people believe that he will never be fair with people that are brown or black ever."

The group also plans to hold a protest next Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at the courthouse.

TigerCASH convenient and helpful to incoming students

With those cheesy grinning mug shots staring back from Tiger Cards, students could easily underestimate the value of their Tiger Cards. The card has multiple beneficial purposes including the use of TigerCASH which is available to all university students.

For incoming freshmen, the information overload about new regulations, privileges and activities can be appealing and daunting at the same time.

Each student has access to TigerCASH, a debit system which may be used for various expenses throughout campus. Printing copies at the library, grabbing a soda from a vending machine before class and eating breakfast at Einstein's Brothers can all be made easily available with TigerCASH.

Kimberly Roberts, University Auxiliary Services Marketing Coordinator, claims many benefits are gained with the use of TigerCASH.

Nashville's "John School" Observed by CNN

(Nashville's program publically displays their mug shots, though there are no statistics available regarding the re-offense rate of program participants specifically.)

Conversations about prostitution are more than conversations about sex. We're talking about victimization, autonomy, abuse, and loneliness. Prostitution is not a victimless crime, because for every man or woman that enters the profession willingly, there are far more people suffering from abuse and addiction with no clear way out. The johns mentioned in the story are equal parts pitiful and frustrating. Even the man who seems to get it, who feels remorse for his crime, is quoted as saying, "These girls are somebody's daughters. I have a daughter."

They are somebody's daughters. But they are also grown women who have always been seen as belonging to someone other than themselves.

Editorial: This downturn is positive

The potential deep cutbacks in the Crime Stoppers of Southwest Florida program, which posts fugitives' mug shots and offers tips for their capture and convictions, will put more of a challenge on law-enforcement agencies and citizens to keep communities safe.

But we can do it. It's worth all the effort. Whatever it takes.

Police: Tip leads to arrest of rape suspect at Tampa motel

Thursday morning, police sent out two more mug shots of Frye, from 2003 and 2004. They also checked homeless shelters for anyone who might have seen him.

Frye stopped at the New Beginnings Emergency Shelter on Nebraska Avenue in Sulphur Springs about a week before the rape. It spooked shelter director Dan Julian and his wife, Jeanette, who live behind the shelter.

Frye was there for dinner and then left, but he was around quite a few women and children, the couple said. According to their records, it was Frye's first time there.

They later looked up his criminal record.

"Oh, that guy's a scary man,'' Dan Julian said.

A local woman named Linda remembers him as the infant whose screams for a diaper change sometimes went unanswered by his alcoholic mother, the baby who ended up in a children's home crib at just half a year old.

You are being watched

Enlarging the picture, you can see the mug shots with peoples names underneath each one. Not codes or aliases, but full names. They were clearly looking for particular individuals.

On the existence of the database, campaigners are frank. It wasnt a surprise, I think it was fairly common knowledge amongst activists, said Amelia Gregory. Common sense dictates that these photographs are being taken by the police to be used for something. Anecdotal evidence backs this up. When Marina Pepper arrived at an action, she was quizzed by a FIT officer on a matter from her personal life she had told few friends about, but had mentioned once on the front-line of a protest. I asked him how he knew that. I just guessed, he told me. In spite of this overwhelming evidence, a police press release insisted that the Met Police Public Order Branch does not hold a database of protestors.

Better security boosts agencies' use of wireless devices

For instance, NYCWiN provides first responders with high-speed data access to support large file transfers, including fingerprints, mug shots, city maps, automatic vehicle location and full-motion streaming video.

Physical security is the first step to securing the network. The broadband network consists of a series of nearly 400 sets of antennas, connected to the wired infrastructure, that are installed on the rooftops of city-owned buildings throughout the city's five boroughs. The antennas transmit wirelessly to modem devices installed in agency buildings or vehicles. The devices are stored in secure, rugged cabinets accessible only to authorized personnel through locks and key badges. If an intruder breaks into the cabinets, alarms alert security personnel in DOITT's network operations center, Snodgrass said.

Family's fury over MacAskill 'snub'

"They even publish mug shots. Here in Scotland it appears that the prisoner's rights are more protected than the families of their victims."

Mr McLeod said the family has recently furnished Highland area fiscal Andrew Laing with fresh information about the prisoner's alleged involvement in Kevin's death. If the family exhausts mechanisms in the Scottish judicial system without success, it intends appealing to the European Court of Justice.

Mr McLeod said: "This case has been a dog's breakfast from the outset but no matter how long it takes, and regardless of cost, we are determined to expose the truth as to the true circumstances surrounding Kevin's horrific death."

In turning down the request for a meeting, Mr MacAskill did not think it appropriate when, he said, discussions could cover "operational policing matters".

Homing In on Trinity's Huaqiao

I pull out the two Louie Chow mug shots from my collection of photocopied archives. "Anybody recognize this man?" (Louie as a smooth-faced young merchant in Ch'ing dynasty finery) "Or this one?" (a glowering veteran, some 15 years later, of one-too-many run-ins with America's 'Oriental Exclusion' bureaucracy). People crane forward for a glimpse at the pictures, but remain silent.

"Anybody here named Louie?" I ask, in frustration. Some shrug, some sigh, but nobody answers. In the back of the crowd, a voice murmurs in Taishanese, "I could swear it sounds just like he asked if anybody here was named Louie."

Let's try another photocopy, Exhibit B: the hand-brushed joint-stock certificate declaring the Louie family ownership of Weaverville's Wing Chong store nearly a century ago.

Stepping into another's skin

Disrespecting the police is not ''disorderly conduct'' and does not warrant handcuffing and arresting a citizen, complete with mug shots. There is no such crime as contempt of cop.

Gates, a senior and respected professor at the world's most prestigious university, has clout. Many victims of this particular police excess don't. This is why some are still urging Gates to sue, not as an act of personal greed or vengeance but of civic virtue, to highlight, through a high-profile case that will garner national and worldwide publicity, the daily misuse of police powers against vulnerable individuals. .

Cedar Rapids Crime Victim Gets His Wish

Police say some of Ferin's neighbors were also victimized and one recognized a suspect from police mug shots. Police were looking at the two suspects before Ferin approached TV9Officers on Tuesday night charged Chase Meyer, 17, with 2nd degree burglary and false use of a credit card. Quinton Spicher, 17, faces one count of false use of a credit card.Police say the surveillance video Ferin did obtain helped with one part of the case. It showed one of the suspects pulling away from the convenience store in a car that was later identified as stolen.Sgt. Cristy Hamblin, a Cedar Rapids Police spokesperson, said "that part of it made up a piece of how were able to connect the dots so to speak."Sgt. Hamblin says it's almost unheard of for a crime victim to get surveillance video from a business. But tracking down illegal credit card transactions, from your own account, is something victims can do a lot easier than police.

Gangster grub

Decorated with vintage travel posters and gangster mug shots, as well as a black-and-white checkered floor, the modern interior space is neat and clean. The dining room is lent a touch of authenticity by being directly adjacent to an enormous brick oven where the delicious pizzas are prepped.

Service ranged from adequate to altogether laissez-faire. On a final lunch rush visit, our server forgot our bread basket, and getting the check took an especially long time. Overall, staff members were usually amiable, if not always prompt.

At first glance, you might be tempted to dismiss Lucky Luciano as a backpackers' haven. But it serves up some of the liveliest Italian dishes in town. And, even if you'll be inhaling a bit of that infamous Holešovice dust, there may be no better way to enjoy the waning days of summer than with a pizza or some fine pasta on that enormous patio.

Athens-Clarke officer earns national recognition for community

On Henderson Extension, he showed a friendly resident mug shots of an armed robber and other criminals.

"This one guy I'm looking for doesn't have a warrant or anything, but I know that he's been driving, and his license is suspended," he told the man. "If you happen to see him, just give us a call, and you don't have to use your name."

Howard later explained the man he was looking for actually is a big-time drug dealer, and if he can stop him for driving without a license, he'll get the chance to look for drugs.

The Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina

There are computers to check suspects' backgrounds and a mug shot station-complete with heights marked in black on the wall that serves as the backdrop."

In the virtual martial law imposed in New Orleans after Katrina, the war on the poor sometimes even spilled over into the war on terror. In his latest book Zeitoun, published in July, Dave Eggers tells the story of a local Syrian immigrant who stayed in New Orleans to protect his properties and ended up organizing makeshift relief efforts and rescuing people in a canoe. He continued right up until he was arrested by a group of unidentified, heavily armed men in uniform, thrown into Camp Greyhound, and questioned as a suspected terrorist. In an interview with Salon, Eggers said:

Statesman Sports

And I just finished one of the two pages that have individual mug shots of the varsity football players.

17 down, 16 to go.

After a while, putting the small photos on the page ... in just the right size as to be uniform ... with the names typed underneath ... in the same size, about the same distance underneath the photo ... and with all the photos spaced equidistance apart ... spaced across the width of the page (within the page design) ... so it can all be uniform ... will just about make the veins at the temples of your head begin to throb and expand.

And "uniform", I guess, is an appropriate word given the time of year - the early beginnings of the school sports season.

While I'm on the subject of that special sports section, it will be included with the Aug.

Exhibit | Roy G Biv gallery Objects used as metaphors for what is

Like mug shots, the images are sterile and enigmatic. We can read some information from the photos, but the meaning is elusive.

Through descriptive titles such as Zuzana's only chair, Jason's grandpa's chair (not comfortable) and One of Hallie's alley finds (the one on the landing), James provides an interpretive window.

Often silly, pieces such as My new chair, the new baby, the backyard throne is for backyard reading and dog petting are a mix of comedy and pleasure.

Strader presents objects in states of transition or transformation. The results of natural processes such as evaporation and freezing are visible.

Using the concept of longing to guide her work, Strader focuses on the contradictory nature of desire -- most evidently in Cure.

Armed robbery lands man in jail for five years and a day

Using that drawing, police put together an array of seven mug-shot photos, one of which Karageorges immediately singled out as the man who had robbed her and her business. The photo she selected was that of James. "We're very pleased with the disposition," Miliote said. "We (the DA's office) need to support the businesses in Taunton and other communities [in Bristol County]." Assistant District Attorney Robert Kidd prosecuted the case with Norton attorney Daniel Rich defending James. Taunton Police Detective Manuel Spencer investigated the case leading to the arrest of James.

West Midlands Police say CCTV evidence invaluable

It is then compared to more than 300,000 mugshots of criminals held on the police database.

While the results cannot be used as evidence, the Aurora project has already helped identify 17 offenders from a trial of 58 searches and helped to overcome grainy images.

A force spokesman said: "CCTV is a vital element in investigating crime and sits alongside advances in DNA and fingerprint analysis as a major development in solving offences.

"Such evidence has proved invaluable in a number of very high profile cases and now forms an integral part of every major investigation. CCTV can also provide a deterrent effect on criminals."

Most Wanted: Leroy Hutchinson

Mug shots and identifiers for wanted persons from each office's Most Wanted list will be forwarded to the Cape May County Herald asking for the public's assistance in their apprehension.

This week the county is looking for Leroy Hutchinson, 45, who is wanted for burglary and theft. He was last seen in the Wodbine area.

Citizens are asked to contact the County Prosecutor's Tip Line at 463-LEAD (609-463-5323) or the County Sheriff's Office Tip Line at (609-675-1207) with their tips.

The public is urged not to attempt to apprehend the fugitives themselves. The most wanted list will appear every two weeks thereafter.

According to Sheriff Schaffer, “We have enhanced our working relationships with the Prosecutor's Office and local police departments on various law enforcement initiatives including our fugitive units.

The officers pay close attention to drug houses and troubled apartment blocks so they can have targets evicted, hoping to disrupt their business and move them away.

It doesn't make them many fans. Residents of a recently busted drug house left cursing graffiti for the officers before they left -- a couple calling Countryman a fool.

"They're a--holes," said a woman the officers picked out as a user. She admits to doing whatever drug she can get her hands on. She lives in an alleged drug house the officers love to target -- by blaring the Magnum PI song over their patrol car public address system at 7 a.m.

Nick Talbot: Start of new season leaves this writer feeling Zzzzzz

I never could have made it in the military.

Regardless, we had to take

mug shots of all the players for our Web site, kdhpressbox.com, which is getting a major overhaul and upgrade this football season.

It will have statistics and standings for all the district s and teams, some videos produced by us, such as a sports reporters roundtable, and the Game of the Week highlights, not to mention blogs from all of our sports staffers and the ability for you, our public, to comment and talk amongst yourselves.

This, too, will launch Aug. 27 and I am pretty excited about it.

I know if you could see me now, you could not tell, though. It is Sunday, my only day off before Aug.30, and as I write this I already know where I will be – sprawled out on the couch, snoring, my tongue half hanging out and drool slowly rolling down my chin.

Who Fought The Law? Fall Out Boy, Juelz Santana, Travis Barker

And to make matters worse, his awfully unflattering mug shot is circulating the web like wildfire.

In other pop-punk news, Travis Barker is embroiled in a very public dispute with Shanna Moakler, his ex-wife and mother of his two children, according to PerezHilton.com. Turns out when he was dropping the kids of at Moakler's parents' house in Rhode Island, a bit of a hissy fit erupted on both sides. Barker refused to leave when Moakler refused to let his nanny stay with the kids, so Moakler lost it and called the cops. Shortly after, Barker updated his Twitter saying the car of alleged child molester and alleged uncle of Moakler, Rick Sinnott, was parked at the house hence his reluctance to leave the kids there. Eventually, the cops disclosed Sinnott was not in the house so Barker left.

Innocent man in photo infamy

But CCTV and 10 popular Chinese Websites, such as Netease (163.com), sina.com.cn and huanqiu.com, used the mug shot of the innocent Tao to accompany their stories, even though the two men bear no resemblance to each other.

The innocent Tao and his wife have a son and a daughter, and the family lives with Tao's mother. He has been the Party leader of the village, which has more than 3,000 residents, for nine years.

"My family and I are suffering a lot of mental pressure," the 42-year-old said. "People are pointing at us behind our backs."

He said he called CCTV to straighten out the mix-up, but a representative said someone would have to investigate before giving him a reply.

"Netease didn't reply to my e-mail," he said, referring to the Website he believes was the source of the mistake.

Former 'Top Model' Designer Gets 59 Years to Life Sentence

Phil Spector gets his mugshot taken after being convicted of murdering actress Lana Clarkson. The music producer was sentenced to 19 years to life.

North Kern State Prison

Add this mugshot to Eric Carmen's list of greatest hits ... right up there with 'Hungry Eyes.' The singer was arrested in September 2008 for driving extremely drunk in Ohio. He was sentenced on April 16 to a month in jail.

Bedford Height Police Department

'So You Think You Can Dance' choreographer Alex Da Silva was arrested on April 4 for allegedly sexually assaulting several of his dance students. He was held in lieu of $3.8 million bail, but has not been charged. Los Angeles County prosecutors say they need more time to investigate and interview other possible victims.

Mom tells dealers to leave the drug world

Directly in front of them were placards with the mug shots of arrested and convicted dealers.

They didn't know it, but 19 speakers were waiting to take their shots. They were in for some of the most uncomfortable 21/2 hours of their young lives.

They entered the room with differing attitudes. A 33-year-old woman seemed humbled. A 24-year-old man looked defiant. A 21-year-old man tried to look cool. And a 19-year old man kept looking toward the door.

As the call-in progressed, their demeanors softened. Most of the time their gazes fell to the floor or they stared numbly ahead.

Except for one young man who looked each speaker in the eye with rapt attention.

Successful model

Anders led off with a brief explanation of the program, modeled after a successful one in High Point, N.C.

Pinellas Sheriff's Office expands facial recognition system

Up to this point, deputies have only been able to use facial recognition to search a large database of statewide jail mug shots.

The Pinellas project is a yearlong pilot program. If successful, it could be used statewide.

"We're breaking new ground here," Sheriff Jim Coats said Thursday.

Law enforcement agencies already have access to the driver's license system. When they type in a person's name, they get that person's information, which includes a photo. Now, deputies can search by face.

For the pilot program, only the images of drivers from Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco and Manatee counties will be used.

Officials said the new partnership could help deputies catch more instances of driver's license fraud and identity theft.

West Midlands police breakthrough on CCTV images

It is then compared to more than 300,000 mug-shots of criminals held on the police database. The computer spits out possible links for officers to investigate.

While the results cannot be used as evidence, the Aurora project has already helped identify 17 offenders from a trial of 58 searches.

PC Claire Gibbons, who has been developing the system's training programme, said: "While this might not sound like a large number, these are crimes that are likely to have remained undetected without the system."

Chief Supt Steve Dugmore, who has been leading the project since 2000, said it had taken a long time to come to fruition but had yielded a "brilliant" tool for officers.

"The software provides a swift and timely method of identification and one which will save officers time in bringing offenders to justice," he added.

'It is what it is' isn't an answer (at least not a good one)

As a government teacher, I actually have a picture of “Jimbo's" mug shot on my classroom wall. The caption below it reads: “Pay attention in government class, or this man could become your congressman." The picture becomes part of my lesson plans each year: 1. when students ask “What is racketeering?" and 2. when I stress the importance of paying close attention to government actions and actively participating in government by voting, campaigning, or at the very least, writing a letter (or e-mail).

It embarrasses me to bring my wife home to Youngstown (she is an Annapolis native). I tell her about all the great things here, the people, the food, the atmosphere of so many local stores and restaurants — all to be undone by stories of parties for convicted felons, and other odd behaviors (grocery store picketers).

Hylla to hear summary judgment motion in Suburban Journals

The March 28 story featured a mug shot of Tedford, his physical description and last known address.

The next day, Tedford was cashing a check at a grocery store when the clerk recognized him from the story and called the police. Tedford was arrested.

The suit claims the paper breached its duty of care and was negligent in failing to adequately investigate the relevant facts of the Oct. 13, 2000 complaint, falsely labeled the plaintiff as one of the "Top 5 Most Wanted Criminals" and that the printed words were libelous.

Tedford also contends the defendant, as owner of the paper, wantonly and willfully destroyed his reputation and good name by again running the article in April 2001 after he called the paper to advise it that he was not a criminal and that the allegations against him were false.

Two Honolulu Cops Arrested in Nevada

The pictures on Nevada television news are mug shots of Honolulu police officers Shayne Souza and Kevin Fujioka, busted in Clark County on charges of possessing marijuana. "Part of the policy is, you get arrested, 99.9 percent of the time you'll get terminated depending on the facts and circumstances leading up to the investigation," SHOPO president Tenari Maafala said.

Saturday night the men were at a police softball tournament at Desert Breeze Park, six miles west of the Vegas strip. Nevada police said they were sitting in a van that was parked illegally and smelled of marijuana.

"We were just going to walk up and say, 'Hey, can you park properly?'" Park Police Cmdr. Roy Michael said. "But as soon as the occupants of the vehicle noticed that we were going to make contact they decided to take off in the vehicle."

The officers chased the van then chased Souza and Fujioka who had jumped out and were trying to get away on foot.

Downhill from Here

From friends on unsympathetic newspapers I learned the term of art for the front-page formula that ran a big headline next to a mugshot (The man who is stopping your trains tonight!). They called it the crucifixion layout. It implied that strikes were caused by some ranting Messiah leading reasonable workers astray, rather than (as was usually the case) the same reasonable workers taking a self-interested decision to maximise their wages. It became obvious, however, that governments needed the assent of trade unions to succeed. Together with capital and government, they made up the wobbly three-legged throne on which Heath sat. Later, three legs became two when Harold Wilson and the trade unions grandest grandee, Jack Jones, reached the agreement known as the Social Contract, whereby workers agreed to moderate their wage demands so that the two-figure inflation rates could be beaten.

Leicester traders alerted to ban on shoplifters

The mugshot of a notorious shoplifter is being sent to hundreds of stores in Leicester.

It comes after Danny Briers was banned from every shop in Leicester city centre and those in his home neighbourhood of Clarendon Park.

The 27-year-old has about 70 convictions for theft and stole to fund his drug habit.

Officers are circulating Briers' photograph to shops in both areas to ensure staff and customers are aware of who he is.

They want them to call police immediately they see Briers breaking the ban, or Asbo, which was imposed last week at Leicester Crown Court.

Deputies Get Access to Driver's License Photos

They've had access to old mug shots of state prisoners. They've had access to old mug shots of inmates at the local jail, at the Hillsborough jails, and at more than a half-dozen other jails peppered throughout the state.

Now, for the first time, deputies attempting to identify someone using the sheriff's unique facial-recognition system will be able to use a database that contains the images of people who may have never had a brush with the law in their lives: Anyone who drives in the state of Florida.

This afternoon, Sheriff Jim Coats announced his office has entered into an arrangement with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles that will allow deputies to access the state agency's database of 1.7 million photographs.

Electra Theodorides-Bustle, executive director of the DHSMV, said the agency is aware its database contains pictures of "folks that have not been arrested," and this was a concern as the DHSMV worked to reach an agreement with Coats.

The Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina

French press review 19 August 2009

The same grainy mug shot of Gonzalez has been splashed across the international pages.

Prosecutors say the 28-year-old is one of America's cyber-crime kingpins. Gonzalez, along with two un-named Russian co-conspirators, is accused of hacking into the payment systems of retail giants and stealing information from about 130 million bank card holders.

On the domestic front, financial daily Les Echoes looks at the French government's plan to prevent an A-H1N1 influenza pandemic in schools. Education Minister Luc Chatel yesterday unveiled the new measures, which includes the possibility of closing schools.

In an editorial, Les Echoes accuses the government of deflecting attention from the real issues of the day, such as the economic crisis. The paper says the health threat that was so dreaded never truly materialised.

MOD MOM: What was I saying?

Please don't judge me if you see my mug shot some day. I have a secret — my daughter is 21⁄2 years old and she's not potty trained. That's not the secret though. The secret is that I don't really care. OK, I care. I mean, who wants to change diapers infinitely? But otherwise, it's just not that big of a deal to me. Most other children her age are still in diapers, too. And my pediatrician assured me that it's perfectly normal — after all, she doesn't even stay dry during naps yet, a major indicator of potty readiness. To others, primarily my mother and her generation, I may as well be charged with neglect. Why is it that men can't multitask? Whenever I ask my husband to run a bath and get something out of the laundry, he looks at me like I've asked him to perform surgery — do two things at once?! My friend whose husband actually is a surgeon is no better at home.

Penny for your shirt?

ELIZABETHTOWN — A mugshot of Abraham Lincoln, an outline of Hardin County, and a soldier and helicopter all wrapped inside a penny is the winner of this year’s Heartland Festival T-shirt contest.

Hub City Printing co-owner Debbie Reed and her staff came up with the idea as an offshoot of the festival theme this year: "The Heartland Shines in 2009.’’

"We tried to come up with reasons the Heartland Festival would shine in 2009,’’ said Reed, who owns the business with her husband, Paul. "... Everybody (her staff) gave their opinion and we came up with it.’’

This is Reed’s first time entering the T-shirt design contest, she said.

The mug of Lincoln represented his 200th birthday; the outline of Hardin County with Made in the U.S.A.
